Meta LUG

Discussion about the LUG. Organization and management.

My first LUG experience was at KWLUG and this is how I found it

I discovered the kwlug when I came across a post by Rarsa on the puppy linux forums in my search for a simple distro capable of running on legacy hardware.

He mentioned that he uploaded an XDG-Menu presentation he did for his local Linux users group and his profile said he was from Kitchener, Ontario. I was surprised to see someone so close to home because most of the puppy users and forum contributors were from overseas. I checked out kwlug.org and had been planning on switching from vonage to a VSP/asterisk solution for a while so the next meeting topic was right up my alley. Thanks to John for his presentation and the nice gift.

Organizing Cambridge LUG

There are already LUG in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Cambridge, England. Why not Cambridge, Ontario? Well, now there is a LUG in Cambridge, Ontario. Or there will be, shortly.

CambridgeLUG Will hold pre-meetings, in December 2006 and January 2007 before the official grand Opening in February 2007.

The December, Organizational Meeting invites the participation and input of those interested in helping to form and mold Cambridge LUG.

The January 2007 Founders Meeting will embrace and extend the work of the first meeting. We'll discuss upcoming meeting schedules, topics for presentations and other matters of the LUG. We'll have our first presentation too.

KWLUG Copyright / License

What to do? What to do?

B. pointed out that the KWLUG web site (this site) claims © KWLUG at the bottom of each page. It does this because I put it there when assembling the template for the page. What should the content license for the KWLUG web site really be? I think that the cc-by license is ideal for text content.

MarkSmarty plugin

MarkSmarty ======= This is my attempt to make *yet another input format* + Why do this? + I have no idea! * But maybe it's a reasonable idea? + We shouldn't do things without a good reason. I wonder how you end bullet lists? System.out.println("This is code."); System.out.println("Isn't it pretty?"); I guess that Markdown is the "cool thing" to use these days. If you are curious about the syntax, check out http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/syntax Here is the [Markdown page](http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown). I am also experimentizing with different site maps.

How can we help?

Here's an interesting rumour for us to consider. First seen on the Yahoo! Financial SCOX forum.

[Microsoft(r) tech support] told me that "in the fall, having the latest WGA will become mandatory and if its not installed, Windows will give a 30 day warning and when the 30 days is up and WGA isn't installed, Windows will stop working, so you might as well install WGA now." -- Ed Bott's Blog

This could be a complete fabrication, a case of broken telephone, FUD, a trial balloon from Redmond or something else. But what if it is close to being true? Any way to confirm or refute this? Anybody know anybody at Microsoft(r) with the ability, the clout and the willingness to get a real answer on this? A written answer, with attribution? Of course, with enough public outcry, Microsoft(r) will simply change their mind on this (if it's a trial balloon) and claim that the speakers were "wrong, misinformed, spoke out of turn," and deny all complicity.

KWLUG, now World famous!

LXF80

The KWLUG (that's us!) was featured in the June 2006 issue (LXF80) of Linux Format (UK) as their Overseas LUG of the Month. See p.102-3 when you run right out and buy a copy.

Available available available

The library is changed. The publication status is still not right, but the available books should be available and the "On Loan" ones loaned.

Next step: get books that are loaned out into the database.

Words words words

Oh my! Look at all the books in our library! Thanks to the secret elves (a.k.a. Michael, Richard, Kevin, and Charles) for entering in all of these.

Unfortunately there are some bugs:
- If non-administrators enter books the status is "on loan"
- The ISBN number is not required (and it should be)
- If administrators add books they have status "not published"
- Navigation of the library is not so good. You click on a book and can't get back the original list of books you had.
- I want to be able to check out and sign in things en masse.

More meta comments

Here are a couple of uneducated opinions about the website, before I forget:

0. I think the "Reviews" session should go. We should move the two reviews in there somewhere else (maybe to somebody's blog, maybe to an "archive" section as stories) and take out the link. I think the personal blog section is the right place to put reviews.

1. I wish we could enter in a lot less information for the library page. Ideally, we would enter in an ISBN number and our module would use the magic of Web 2.0 to find as much of the rest of the fields as it can. Even if this only worked for a limited set of publishers (O'Reilly, say) we would be better off.

Testing search updates

I have installed the search box, and run the search index update once, manually. If the cron job is running correctly on Drupal then this post will show up in a search for wireless within 15 minutes. We'll see.

Okay, search and re-indexing works.
